When Calvin turns out to be really good (some might say. During halftime, there’s a raffle to play with the Knights’ star player, Tracy Reynolds (Morris Chestnut, “Under Seige 2,” “Boyz N the Hood”).

Why they didn’t use the Lakers or the Clippers - two real NBA teams based in LA - is beyond me, but regardless.Īfter a rough loss, Calvin approaches Coach Wagner (Robert Forster) and after impressing him with his b-ball knowledge, is offered free tickets to the next game. He uses the kids to make money by selling chocolate bars outside the Staples Center in LA before (fictional) Los Angeles Knights basketball games.

He is in a different movie entirely and is dialed in to an 11. Bitterman, played manically by Crispin Glover (“Back to the Future”). This is essentially “Annie” without the singing and basketball instead. It is a fun movie and I enjoyed watching it, but there is a very dark subplot that I have many questions about.įirst of all, movies about orphans were a dime a dozen for a while. Having never seen it prior nor having no real context for it, I obviously did not enjoy it as much as my co-host, who also happens to be a huge basketball fan. The film he picked was 2002's “Like Mike,” starring rapper Lil’ Bow Wow as a young orphan named Calvin Cambridge who finds an old pair of (supposedly) Michael Jordan's Nikes and makes a wish to be able to play basketball “like Mike.” After lightning strikes him and the shoes (yes, really), he is imbued with the “powers” of NBA great Jordan, but all the while, only wishes someone would adopt him.

And, of course, you can watch Tatum grind to “Pony” anytime you want thanks to the powers of the internet.Recently on my podcast, my co-host and I picked favorite movies from our childhoods to rewatch to see if they still hold up. In the meantime, fans can get their Magic Mike fix with the HBO Max reality show Finding Magic Mike, which premieres December 16. Magic Mike’s Last Dance is set to premiere exclusively on HBO Max, but a release date has yet to be announced. In July, Zoë Kravitz (who is also Tatum’s rumored girlfriend) commented on one of her father’s Instagram posts, tagging Tatum and asking, “You auditioning for MM3?” We all thought it was just a joke at the time, but now, it looks like there might be a spot onstage available if Kravitz wants it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt famously re-created a Magic Mike dance number during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live in 2012. Magic Mike’s Last Dance might also provide an opportunity for new men to join the beloved team of male strippers.
LIKE MIKE ACTOR PROFESSIONAL
As for the actors who joined in Magic Mike XXL - namely a sultry Donald Glover, actual professional dancer Stephen “tWitch” Boss, and MC extraordinaire Jada Pinkett Smith - their involvement also remains a mystery. However, both Rodriguez and Bomer left some joyful emoji comments on Tatum’s Instagram, which should bode well for their potential return. The rest of the OG Magic Mike crew, Adam Rodriguez (Tito), Joe Manganiello (Big Dick Richie), Matt Bomer (Ken), and Kevin Nash (Tarzan), have yet to confirm or deny their involvement. Well world, looks like Mike Lane’s tapping back in. “Well world, looks like Mike Lane’s tapping back in,” the actor wrote on Twitter and Instagram, sharing a photo of the front page of the script. The script has already been written by trilogy writer Reid Carolin, and Channing is, obviously, already onboard. The third, and presumably final, film in the stripper trilogy, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, will be directed by Steven Soderbergh, who directed the original 2012 Magic Mike but did not return for Magic Mike XXL (2015). And, as the great Jada Pinkett Smith said in Magic Mike XXL, we’re about to see if “he’s still got some magic in that Mike.” On Monday, November 29, Channing Tatum announced another Magic Mike movie is in the works. Well, grab your breakaway pants and hit play on “Pony,” by Ginuwine, because Magic Mike is officially coming back for another round. Photo: Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection
